We are a dance company, influenced by both hip-hop and contemporary styles, always courageous in our artistic vision. We are committed to challenging ourselves and others, willing to take risks to push everyone in the team to the next level. We aspire to inspire others through good leadership and attention to excellence with the objective of continual growth. We are a company who greatly value collaboration and community.

OUR RECENT WORK

BFG: Black Female Greats

...big friendly giants. This piece pays homage to the huge imprint that black female jazz musicians made in the past to give right to the celebration of all black art. The sounds of trailblazers such as, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan, pour onto a moonlit stage.

This piece is the introduction to one of three tributes to black female greats of the past, present, and future. We want BFG to be seen and felt by people who love jazz music.

From a young age Cherilyn had always been drawn to Nina Simone's character. After learning more about her life, Simone came to be the driving force behind BFG. This is Cherilyn’s first piece of work which she references her own identity and culture and it felt only right to start this new journey with music that she feels helped shape the woman who she is today.

BII: The Maze

Come and experience Building In Isolation: The Maze!

Weave through partitioned rooms, in an empty shop unit, decorated to resemble a home. Inside you will find performers waiting, bouncing, cleaning and procrastinating. Step into a familiar world where everyone is stuck inside, some doing a lot and others not doing much.

I U are a contemporary hip hop company led by Cherilyn Albert. We have performed on stages such as The Place, Southbank Centre and Arts Depot. We have our own choreographic practice called 'Problematic Props' which adds to our unique performance style of using objects in inspire and create movement.

UNREST

Unsettled. Unknown. UNREST. The earth beneath us bubbles, can we stay still, and ignore the building tension? We see, hear and feel it so much that it’s impossible not to move. We are unsettled by the unknown, we cannot rest. Movement influenced by both Hip-Hop and Contemporary dance, wrapped in a haunting soundtrack from the work of Electronic Palestinian producers, Filastine. This performance is an embodiment of the themes in their music. In the end they are forced to let go of their physical homes and rather find a sense of home in each other.
